The aromatic bitters were created in 1824 by Dr Johann Siegert, a German army surgeon, in the town of Angostura (now Ciudad Bolívar), Venezuela, as a remedy for soldiers. The family moved production to Trinidad in 1875, where the bitters and Angostura rums are still made. The bottle's oversized label is a famous mistake that was never corrected.
